"In the ego-threat situation, however, those with high self-esteem become less likeable and were rated by their partners as rude, unfriendly, and arrogant. It appears that when high self-steem people feel threatened, they try to assert their competence, which comes across as boastful and abrasive.

People who harbor positive illusions about themselves are likely to enjoy the benefits and achievements of high self esteem. But these same individuals may pay a price in other ways, as in relationships with others. "
